78% of the Romanians agree that the Rosia Montana Project will create new jobs

The Support Group for Roşia Montană Project points out: 78% of the Romanians believe the mining project will create jobs

The Group expresses its disappointment of not having been invited to the recent debate on the public television.

March 5th, 2012. The Support Group for Roşia Montană Project (GSPRM) wants to draw the attention on the fact that the TV show “Judge for Yourself”, broadcasted live by national public television recently, informed about the massive support for the Rosia Montana Project among the public opinion. “Today, in Romania, 78% of the citizens believe it is important for Rosia Montana Gold Corporation project to start in order to solve the employment issues there”, declared Mr. Mircea Toma during the show.

“We want to emphasize this statement, which must be taken in serious. This percentage is similar to the results of certain studies that the Group has, and coming from a source such as ActiveWatch – which is an NGO renowned for its opposition to the mining project – this information becomes even more relevant”, declared Mr. Ion Popescu, the president of Meridian National Trade Union Confederation and a member of the Steering Board of the Support Group. “We want to confirm to those people who are convinced about the positive impact of the mining project on the socio-economic situation in the area that the results are accurate and the huge majority of the residents of Roşia Montană see mining truly as the only saving solution, generating long-term development. If there are still people who doubt this, we suggest they go on site, visit Rosia Montana and not satisfy only with information presented on television”, added Ion Popescu.

At the same time, the members of the Support Group express their disappointment that the producers of the TV show “Judge for Yourself” did not invite any representative out of the 70 members of the Group in the debate on the topic of the Roşia Montană project held on February 23rd. “We are perfectly aware of the time limitations of a TV show, but a Group such as this, which is representative for the civil society, which gathers many of the mining project supporters, should have had at least one representative, if the producers truly intended to invite all the relevant parties. From the information we have, there are no other industrial projects having such a relevant support group at national level, so we should have been invited if only for the uniqueness of this undertaking”, concluded Prof. Univ. Ovidiu Nicolescu, President of The Romanian National Council of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and member of the Steering Board of the Support Group.

The Support Group for Roșia Montană Project is an unprecedented initiative in Romania, by which the civil society mobilized in support of an industrial project of wide scope. The Group was officially launched in June 2011, consisting of over 70 major organizations in Romania: trade unions, employers’ associations, universities, local mayoralties from communities with mining tradition and not only, foundations and non-governmental organizations from different areas of activity and even individuals and public personalities.
